Artist Statement Drawing from my own experiences as both an artist and a teacher I have developed a keen interest in the dual roles that co-exists within my practice. I have felt a natural harmony that allowed me to use my creative skills and processes in a classroom setting and concurrently I have felt an unease as I struggled to determine my identity within this role while maintaining my own art practice. My passion for both fields drives my attempt to balance them.
This work investigates questions around identity on both a professional and personal level. Notions of place and belonging have evolved from the changing physical and metaphorical landscapes I have experienced. The bridge serves as a symbol of the in-between space that we can all occupy as we transition between experiences, places or personas. Longing to belong while attempting to preserve my independence finds me often traversing this bridge. This work exhibits my research and the exploration process that I have used to reflect on these ideas.
